Elis James travels to Euro 16 for the BBC

For online shorts and radio show

Elis James is to front a series of comedy shorts about Euro 2016 for the BBC.

The commission coincides with Wales making it to the last stages of a major tournament for the first time in 58 years.

Elis In Euroland has kicked off with this two-minute clip about his excitement about his homeland's success. 'We'll be dining at top table,' he said. 'Bon appetit.'

The comedian will travel to France to follow his team, profile key members of the squad and offer cultural guides to Wales's opponents.

The rest of the shorts will be published on the BBC Wales Sport Facebook page every day his nation remain in Euro 2016.

James said: 'Euro 2016 is as much a venture into the unknown for fans as it is for the players. I'm more nervous though, because I'm older than them so have wanted it for longer!'

The comedian who stars in BBC Three sitcoms Crims and Josh, is also presenting a three-part series on BBC Radio Wales, also called Elis In Euroland.

Producer Ian Richardson said: 'This is a landmark moment for the country and we want to follow the team's journey through the tournament in a fun and engaging way through the eyes of a real fan.'

The first half-hour episode airs on Friday June 10 and the last on June 24, after the first round stages – suggesting the BBC isn't that confident Wales will get through to the final 16.

James hit the headlines last year when he followed Wales out to Cyprusfor one of their qualifying matches,

BBC Radio 4 producer Tim Walklate tweeted James to see if he was available for an interview to talk about the team's success, but the comic's reply: 'I will be s***faced unfortunately,' went viral.

James of his new show said: 'The BBC saw this and, in their wisdom, thought, "we want a piece of him".'

The Welsh campaign begins on June 11 against Slovakia. They are in Group B alongside England and Russia.
