Ron Howard backs UK YouTube pair

Ghost-hunting pilot ordered from Jack & Dean

Online comedy duo Jack and Dean have been commissioned to make an online short from a production company backed by Hollywood director Ron Howard.

They will shoot a pilot episode of their show, called Ghost Fighting Corporation, after becoming the the only Brits to win funding from a scheme run by US-based online studio New Form Digital. Ten films have been ordered – and the best of them will be made into series.

It’s a comedy about a fake ghost-busting team that takes advantage of people’s supernatural fears to make money… until they start experiencing actual supernatural forces.

Jack Howard and Dean Dobbs, who host Chart Bite on BBC iPlayer and are regulars on Radio 1, will film the short later this month. They said: ‘It is such a brilliant opportunity, and we just hope we don’t mess it up and ruin our entire future.’

The pair are already online successes, having racked up more than 33million YouTube hits. They have have appeared at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, and have an upcoming show at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre in May.

They are also developing a sitcom with Peep Show makers Objective productions.

This is the second time that New Form Digital, also backed by Discovery and Howard’s business partner Brian Grazer, has funded a raft of ’incubator’ projects. The first round last December led to a deal for two series from YouTube stars Sawyer Hartman and KickThePJ for Vimeo.

As well as Jack and Dean, the others chosen this time around are: Ryan Finnerty, Pereira & O’Dell, Ally Maynard, Benjamin Cook, Emily Diana Ruth, Mark Cope & Carlo Moss, Mike Diva, Lisa Schwartz, and Wong Fu.

Jack and Dean’s show will be made by London-based production house Colour TV, who have previously made KSI Demolished and The Bobby Mair show for Comedy Central UK.
