Will Peter Kay play Danny Baker's dad?

Reports of new comedy role

Peter Kay has been reportedly cast to play Danny Baker’s dad in a sitcom based on the broadcaster’s memoirs.

If true, the Mirror’s story would mean that the proud Boltonian would be portraying a ‘wide-boy’ Cockney character likened to Del Boy.

The eight-part BBC Two comedy is based on the autobiography Going to Sea In A Sieve, set in 1970s South London.

It it, Baker tells how his dock worker and union leader father was something of a wheeler-deeler. He said: ‘When Only Fools And Horses arrived on TV, most people I knew thought it was a documentary.’

The comedy has been written by Baker and Jeff Pope, whose credits include Cilla, and Philomena – and Baker has previously said: 'We have some extraordinary casting choices.'

Kay, 41, is soon to appear in BBC One comedy Car Share, which will be released on iPlayer ahead of its TV broadcast. It was also announced last month that Kay will be returning to Phoenix Nights, as a live show forComic Relief.

The second volume of Baker’s memoirs, Going Off Alarming, will be published next week. Click here to preorder it.
