ITV to showcase regional comedy

Arthur Smith is to host a new ITV programme showcasing up-and-coming comedy talent in the South-West of England.

Six half-hour shows go into production this month, and will air from April.

Each episode of Arthur Smith’s Comedy Club will feature three stand-ups performing, plus behind-the-scenes interviews with performers and promoters in a slot called ‘Comedy Insider’.

It will also feature members of the public cracking jokes in a 'comedy booth' touring the region's shopping centres.

One of the gigs producers plan to attend is the Bristol heat of the Chortle student comedy award on February 21.

The show, made by Machine Media, will air on ITV Westcountry and ITV West in a late-evening slot.

Comedians in Wales have recently been the subject of their own TV show, Funny Business, which aimed to find the best unsung comic in the principality. The final episode goes out at 10pm on Monday,
