Little Britain conquers the world

Christmas shows take international Emmy

Little Britain last night scooped the international Emmy award for the best comedy.

The accolade for the Little Britain Abroad Christmas specials contributed to a good night for Britain, which claimed seven prizes – six of them for the BBC.

Executive producer Jon Plowman collected the award at last night’s New York ceremony; one of two he took home after talent hunt How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? was named best non-scripted entertainment.

‘Hooray,’ he said dryly on the winners’ podium as he held the two prizes aloft. ‘Two spiky things to take on the plane.’

Stephen Fry's The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive won best documentary.

He said: ‘It means an enormous amount to think that there may be people who, because of watching the programme, suddenly feel less threatened, less isolated, less alone… If that’s given them confidence to get treatment, to get help and to talk about it, then without wanting to sound too mealy-mouthed and worthy about it, then we’re thrilled.’

Other winners included the controversial More 4 dramatisation Death Of A President, and Jim Broadbent for his role in the BBC's The Street, which was also named best drama series.
