Seinfeld returns to TV

...as a one-off guest star

Jerry Seinfeld is to make a rare guest appearance in an American comedy series.

The comic will show up in the opening episode of the second series of 30 Rock, a critcially acclaimed sitcom set behind the scenes of a live variety.

Ben Silverman, entertainment chairman of the NBC network which airs the show, said: ‘To have Jerry join 30 Rock for its second season launch is impressive, to have him return even for one night in his old Thursday night turf is just classic."

Seinfeld said: ‘I was thrilled to be asked to guest star. I think it's going to be so refreshing for me to be playing myself in a show that has nothing to do with neurotic, dysfunctional New York characters.’

Executive producer and star Tina Fey added: ‘We could not be more excited to have Jerry Seinfeld on the show, because, hopefully, then, regular America might actually find out that we have a show and watch it - maybe at least that one time.

‘And also, he's super funny. So that fell in our lap. He sort of volunteered to come on, and that's going to be great.’

The show will air in the US at 8.30pm on October 4.
