Bringing the house down
Bristol’s oldest comedy club is to be demolished – to make way for one of the largest purpose-built stand-up venues in Britain.
Jesters has brought the neighbouring building, and has applied to Bristol City Council for permission to bulldoze both and rebuild a new comedy club on the site.
Permission is expected to be granted soon, although the club will have to keep the Victorian façade.
But behind it, club owner David Trew plans a 400-seater venue, specially designed for comedy.
He said: “It will be like a Comedy Store-style ampitheatre, but with every audience member at a cabaret-style table with an intimate view of the stage.
“It’s being designed from scratch and will put Jongleurs to shame.”
The venue will have to close for about nine months while the work is carried out. It is planned to close after the Christmas period this year and reopen in September 2006.
Seventeen flats will be built above the venue as part of the scheme.
