Wood slates Ali G

Victoria Wood has attacked Ali G for his "horrible" brand of comedy.

She said the way creator Sacha Baron Cohen spoofed his victims was ‘tiresome’ and ‘like laughing at lunatics’.

In an interview with today’s Radio Times, Wood said: "What I can't bear is something like Ali G, where half the people involved don't know what's going on.

“I find the endless setting up of 'victims' tiresome. With so many good writers and good performers, it's a shame people can't just write a script and have other people learn it.

"It's all got to be done by duping and it's horrible, like laughing at lunatics."In the interview, to promote her West End musical version of Acorn Antiques, 50-year-old Wood added that the new generation of female comics, such as Julia Davis and Catherine Tate. “have felt the need to be as hard or vicious as some of the men’.

However, she admits she watches very little comedy on TV, save for Frasier.
