Reggie Perrin star dies

CJ actor John Barron was 83

Comedy actor John Barron – best known for playing Reginald Perrin’s boss CJ in the Seventies sitcom – has died at the age of 83.

He said the grotesque character – whose catchphrase was "I didn't get where I am today by…” was the highlight of his television career.

"I think my affection for CJ was for a rather cruel reason,’ he once said. “He was the most intolerant man I'd ever met."

Barron was born in central London on Christmas Eve 1920, and a generous godfather paid for him to study at RADA before he went into Rep.

He served as a Navy lieutenant in the war, before picking up his career again and soon found himself a regular on TV.

Early roles included Emergency-Ward 10 and Crown Court, but it was comedy that he was best known, appearing in All Gas and Gaiters, Shelley, The Glums, Yes, Minister, To the Manor Born and Whoops, Apocalypse among many others.
