Karl Pilkington became a star after appearing as Ricky Gervais’s put-upon sidekick in the hit podcasts they made with Stephen Merchant - and which were subsequently animated for HBO. All three met at London radio station XFM, where Pilkington was a producer.

He was given his own starring role in 2010 in Sky’s An Idiot Abroad, a travelogue in which he was reluctantly sent to see the wonders of the world by Gervais and Merchant. A second series followed the next year.

Pilkington was also given a role in Gervais’s Channel 4 series Derek, as care home caretaker Dougie.

Big ensemble cast in Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint

A cast of British comedy stars will feature in a ‘warm, uplifting and genuinely funny’ festive comedy film called Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint.

Headlining the ensemble are John Bradley – who played Samwell Tarly in Game Of Thrones –  Celia Imrie, Richard E Grant, Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh and Jim Broadbent.

Also in the cast are  Sophia Di Martino from Flowers, Adrian Rawlins (Harry Potter’s dad int he film series) Karl Pilkington, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Nigel Planer, EastEnders actress Ann Mitchell, Dave Johns, Dustin Demri-Burns, Harriet Webb and Beau Thompson.

The show revolves around a recluse who despises Christmas, but is sentenced to community service at a retirement home where he is reluctantly drawn into directing a chaotic production of A Christmas Carol.

Distributors Signature Entertainment have just signed a deal to put the movie out in UK and Ireland, Screen Daily reports. 

Signature’s Katie Wilkinson-Javes told the website: ‘Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint is exactly the kind of warm, uplifting and genuinely funny Christmas film that audiences love to discover during the holiday season.

‘With its brilliant ensemble cast, big heart and festive spirit, we’re delighted to be bringing the film to UK and Irish audiences in cinemas this Christmas.’

The film will be directed by Jack Spring from a screenplay by Chris Boyle-McQuarry.
