Amy Gledhill lands her own BBC sitcom

Six-part romcom co-written with Starstruck's Nic Sampson

Amy Gledhill is to write and star in a new six-part comedy series for the BBC.

Opening Up, which she has co-written with Nic Sampson is a romcom about a couple who decide to try an open relationship in an attempt to revive their sex life.

Gledhill plays Penny, one half of the long-term couple at the centre of the show, which will be set and filmed in Manchester.

The comic and her co-writer said in a joint statement: ’It's an actual dream come true to get to make a comedy with the BBC, and their support and passion for this project has been incredible from the very start. We can't wait to show you what we've been working on."

Gledhill, who won the Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2023, has previously appeared on Alma's Not Normal and Taskmaster, while Sampson previously worked on Rose Matafeo’s Starstruck.

The show was announced at the BBC’s comedy festival in Liverpool this afternoon.

Jon Petrie, the BBC's director of comedy, said: ‘Opening Up stood out to us immediately. Amy and Nic’s writing is sharp, quick-witted and properly funny, full of all the chaos, awkwardness and emotional mess of modern relationships. But underneath it all there’s real heart, and we can’t wait for BBC audiences to meet Penny and Rhys.’

Jon Thoday, executive producer at programme-makers Avalon said: ‘We very are excited to be working with the BBC, Amy and Nic on this brilliant show. We hope that once again the Edinburgh Fringe will prove itself as an excellent breeding ground for new comedies’
