TV: Simon Callow plays The Rebel in a new sitcom for Gold based on Andrew Birch's cartoon strip in Oldie Magazine He plays Henry Palmer, a near 70-year-old who looks respectable, but has not lost the rebellious spirit of his Mod youth. The three-parter also stars Anna Crilly as his daughter, Cath and Amit Shah as her husband Jeremy. In the opening episode, Henry confronts a thief who raids the till from a charity shop run by Margaret (Anita Dobson). Read an interview with Callow here. Gold, 10pm.

LIVE IN LONDON: The Ealing Comedy Festival resumes with ex-Week Mocker Andy Parsons, middle-class observations from Hal Cruttenden and world-weary Sean Hughes; tomorrow silent comedy genius Boy With Tape On His Face headlines; and on Friday there’s another packed gala with the likes of John Moloney, Phil Nichol and the Raymond & Mr Timpkins Revue, hosted by Shappi Khorsandi.

LIVE IN LONDON: An enormous line-up of comedians play the Conway Hall in what’s being billed as a Rally To Restore Sanity… though after the tumultuous events of the past few weeks this might be beyond the sticking-plaster of a comedy gig.
