Lenny Henry: I never thought black people could be comedians
Clip to promote his new memoirs
Lenny Henry says he never thought comedy could be a job for him when he was younger - because he never saw black comics on TV.
In this new clip, to coincide with the publication of his memoirs, Who Am I, Again?, he says he knew comedy was a possible career 'but not a career involving black people - they were singers and dancers. Growing up I never saw a black person on television on funny being funny for a very long time.'
He said the emergence of Charlie Williams as one of he biggest stars of the TV show The Comedians helped changed that, even if he did the same sort of jokes that white comics would use agianst black people, albeit in a self-deprecating way.
