How Roisin Conaty partly 'browned up' for TV

...but it wasn't her fault!

comedyRoisin Conaty has revealed how she inadvertently 'browned' up for her appearance on Live At The Apollo.

The comic was given make-up designed for much darker skin – intended, she believes, for Romesh Ranganathan – during a touch-up during a break in the recording of her 2015 episode.

It left her with a nose notably darker than the rest of her face, which the BBC tried to fix with digital trickery in the edit.

Her story comes after London Hughes revealed another mix-up involving BBC make-up artists, who used hot chocolate on her face because they had no products suitable for black skin.

Conaty told to Adam Buxton on his podcast that it happened when she came backstage after a camera fault halted her recording.

'I came backstage and a make-up lady comes to fix my face,’ she said, ‘And I was like "honestly, I couldn't care less, I've got to work out a joke"’.

She made her second entrance and performed her set, but after she finished, her sister asked her: 'What's with the make-up mate?’

'And I was like, "what?" So I go to the bathroom and I've just got a completely different colour nose to the rest of my face.'

Somehow, she believes, her make-up was accidentally switched with that of the host of the previous Apollo recording, Ranganathan. And in the dark, no-one noticed until it was too late.

Yet rather than re-record the episode, the BBC simply touched up her features in the edit.

'Basically, they CGI'd my nose!' Conaty told an incredulous Buxton.

'When [the episode] came out… my Twitter blew up, "why's she had a nose job, what's she done to her nose?"

‘It's quite something: look at the bone, look at the bone in my nose!'

Along with host Russell Kane, Nick Helm was the other comic on the ill-fated recording that night, which he called 'the worst gig of my life' after he was booed and suffered walkouts.
