Weird Al, crossword compiler

Let no one say the musical comedian is clueless

comedyIt’s certainly an unexpected new string to his bow… but Weird Al Yankovic has turned crossword compiler.

And he’s started at the top: The New York Times.

The veteran song parodist has compiled today’s puzzle in the newspaper along with Eric Berlin, who said: ‘co-constructing with him was an absolute pleasure’.

Writing to accompany the puzzle he explained: ‘I’ve been a fan of Weird Al practically from the moment he first emerged on the scene. His lyrics were clearly the product of somebody with a puzzler’s mind — just glance at the all-palindrome lyrics of Bob, or his innumerable pun-filled parodies.’

If you’re intending to complete the crossword, don’t read on as there are spoilers ahead.

The pair chose a cheese theme for their clues, including several movie-based puns: A Few Gouda Men, Feta Attraction and The Pelican Brie.

There are also tributes to a couple of his comedy colleagues, with Tom Lehrer and John Cleese worked into the grid.
