'I would love one ounce of Tommy Tiernan's madness'

Edinburgh Fringe comedian Anna Clifford chooses her Perfect Playlist of comedy favourites...

Greg Davies: You Magnificent Beast

Since starting comedy I feel my incredibly loud laugh has been muted as I now enjoy the craft silently. But I was really surprised at how watching Greg Davies’s Netflix special had me laughing out loud again – and on the Tube of all places!

It was his routine about his relationship with his blue teddy bear that his Mum had made him which had me belly-laughing and the photo shared during the show that had the tears rolling down my face. Not to mention I am a massive Taskmaster fan. This Greg Davies special is one I know I will watch again and again.

Ali Wong: Baby Cobra

Ali Wong is the type of comedian that I watch and go, "Damn I wish I wrote that!" I love all her specials but the first one had me hooked.

As a stand-up who loves to lie down, I particularly enjoyed her joke referencing former Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In: ‘I don’t want to lean I want to lie the fuck down’ It’s like when Kim Kardashian recently told all women to ‘Get the fuck up and work’. Shhh. Kim let me hit snooze for the 57th time!

Ali Wong of course is a powerhouse of a woman who has done two specials while pregnant, and writes, produces and acts – so I look up to her a lot. If I can achieve it all and complain about it along the way I’ll be happy with that.

Tommy Tiernan

Tommy Tiernan is a comic I have admired since I was young. I would love an ounce of his madness and magic on stage. There is no doubt that he is one of Ireland's best comics and an incredible storyteller.

I particularly like this bit as it reminds me of my own relationship with my father. I will always see myself as a toddler asking for food.

Tiernan’s stand-up made me a big fan, but The Tommy Tiernan show on RTE is a unique and interesting improvised chat show and The Tommy, Hector and Laurita podcast is a really great and easy listen. Tommy, the triple threat!

Caitlin Reilly

I have a lot of admiration for comics who consistently post good content online, and Caitlin Reilly is one of those. She’s an American comic who blew up over the pandemic.

TikTok isn’t just for dancing and on there you can find her fantastic, hilarious characters that give you that perfect dose of ten-second humour. As well as being a social media star Caitlin is an incredible actor. But it’s nice to give thanks to those that brought the hilarity at a hard time.

The Fast Show

The Fast Show and The Harry Enfield Show were my favourite sketches shows to watch as a child and definitely have a part to play in kick-starting my interest in comedy.

I have yet to find a sketch that has made me laugh as much as the characters in these programmes. This ’terribly drunk’ sketch will never fail to entertain - so simple, so silly, so enjoyable. Reminds me of Father Jack in Father Ted, another great drunk.

Don't Make Me Sing! SNL Sketch

Somebody showed me this sketch recently and it's been living in my head ever since.

I often think a good sign of enjoying something is when you cannot stop thinking about it, when a catchphrase becomes a part of you and your friends’ vocabulary and can always lift you out of a bad mood for just a second.  Don’t Make Me Sing is absolutely brilliant!
