'Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of the greats'
Kyla Cobbler picks her comedy favourites
Cork native and Barcelona resident Kyla Cobbler is at the Edinburgh Fringe with her show Gone Rogue. Here she picks her perfect playlist of comedy favourites.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
My absolute go-to is Veep I can rewatch the series a million times and every time I find a new joke that is killer. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of the greats. Her role in Veep was some of the best comedy acting I have ever seen. When I’m on the road I watch Veep before and after shows to get in the zone.
Dara O Briain: You Had To Be There
The first live show I ever saw was Dara O Briain in the Cork Opera House. I will never forget watching him work and seeing him weave a thread of callbacks throughout the show with incredible ease and skill. It was truly magic.
I played the Opera House myself and it was in the forefront of my mind during soundchecks. It didn’t pass me how special it was that I got to do it years later.
Stephen Fry & Alan Davies: QI
I grew up with panel shows and the comedy combo of Stephen Fry and Alan Davies was a joy to watch. Bouncing off each other will silliness, mischief and intelligence I found it so much fun.
I learnt a lot in my years of hosting pub quiz nights too. I spent weeks watching it when I first moved to Italy and was lacking in craic and needed a wee boost. It’s like watching two best friends get up to no good. Loved it.
Melissa McCarthy - in every role ever
I mean this woman does it all. There are so many characters she’s played that live in my head rent-free and give me the giggles when my mind wonders in a daze.
The role she played as Sandy in Identity Thief alongside Jason Bateman is one of my top three. Every time she reaches up and punches him in the neck. I cannot tell you how much that makes me laugh. She’s a legend. I’m a very tall woman at 5ft 10in, but one day my dream is to reach up and punch a man in the neck.
Rainn Wilson playing Dwight Schrute
The American Office is one of my favourites and I rewatch it all the time. Dwight is easily one of the funniest mockumentary personalities ever written. What an actor!
It’s beyond me how anyone can keep a straight face around Rainn Wilson on set. I loved how much he made me laugh and how he grew in the series. That’s my favourite thing about getting balls-deep in a comedy series, how much I fall in love with the characters. So, so good.
Arrested Development
I mean, what can I say? Tony Hale, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Jessica Walter. The list goes on. My whole fantasy dinner party would be the cast of Arrested Development. What a show! So awkward and funny. Having all the greats in the room of course, it’s going be comedy genius. It’s unbelievable.
