Ten comedy movies given help to get off the ground

The Glasgow Film Festival has announced its list of Funny Features, ten movie projects it is helping develop from emerging talent.

Among the ideas is Notice Me, a queer love story executive produced by Lena Dunham, pictured.

The ten successful applicants will take part in workshops and mentoring to help get their projects off the ground before pitching their films to industry experts during the festival in March.

They are:

Doom Scroll

A conspiracy-obsessed millennial attends a phone addiction camp run by a reformed Silicon Valley executive, only to discover that the Retreat hides a deadly secret.

Project Creators: Josie Charles, Nathan Miller, Rami Sarras Pantoja

Gro(ceries)

Enter the strange, sleepless life of Gro. A night shift worker raised by a family of vampires. Gro has been nurtured in shadows, only to awaken to the most human horror of all: she isn't one of them.

Creators: Catherine Joy White, Sophie King, Rosanna Eden-Ellis, Chinenye Clarissa Ezeudu

How To Survive A Complete Obliteration Of Your Heart

After being unceremoniously dumped, Ayo insists she's fine. But as she navigates the tragic art of moving on, "fine" unravels and she discovers that falling apart might be the only way to put herself back together again.

Creators: Sophie Peacock, Shona Mackenzie

Kidding, Not Kidding

When best friends, Lizzie, a child-free author, and Angela, a working mum, find themselves arguing over whose life is harder, fate intervenes and they switch bodies.

Creators: Gina Lyons, Natalie Malla, Xara Higgs

Long Shadows

After reconnecting at their mother's funeral, an estranged brother and sister go on a chaotic road trip to Anglesey to fulfill their childhood pact to kill their controlling stepfather.

Creators: Helen Price, Celia Jennison

Lyssa and Maxine

A buddy road movie that blends Cornetto Trilogy-esque comedy with rampant female rage. Think Thelma and Louise… if one of them sprouted werewolf fangs and tore through the patriarchy.

Creators: John Pocock, Anna Brook-Mitchell, Angela Nesi

Notice Me

When a proudly queer ex-radio host goes viral for refusing to apologise on air, she moves to London to rebuild her career and entangles herself in a hilarious, and heartfelt love story.

Creators: Jody Wiltshire, Emily Sky Hickin, Amy Leonard

Pont Brec

When her family and livelihood hit breaking point, pillar of her rural community Susan turns to bank robbery. Watch out, Wales. Shit's about to get Swayze.

Project Creators: Kate Heggie, Briony Redman, Damian Evans

Silk Road

Charlie’s taking her family on a madcap road trip from Glasgow to the Cannes Film Festival in an old Volkswagen Polo. All she’s got is 15 quid, three sandwiches and the desperate need to keep her mentally ill mum alive.

Creators: Brian McIver, Rachel Flynn

The Flynn Family Wake

When Finbar Flynn learns of his father's death, he must return to his rural childhood home to participate in a traditional Irish wake organized by his Neo-Pagan brother Padraig.

Project Creators: Jai Vir Rodgers, John Cooney

Organisers say: ‘Funny Features offers all teams the chance to build their knowledge of the film finance landscape, increasing their confidence to navigate the marketplace by building a clearer understanding of their market placement and widening their network of decision-makers.

‘At the end of the lab all teams will have a film finance plan, a polished draft of their script and a project ready to enter the international marketplace to begin securing financing.’
