Soap star Robert Mandan dies at 86

A staple of US sitcoms

Robert Mandan, who starred as wealthy lothario Chester Tate in the 1970s US sitcom Soap has died at the age of 86.

He was also a regular in the comedy series Private Benajamin, where he played Colonel Lawrence Fielding and Three's a Crowd, where he played James Bradford.  

His feature films include The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas opposite Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton and The MatchMaker with Janeane Garofalo.

Mandan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sherry Dixon.
