Thief tried to grab his bank card

Paul Whitehouse has seen off a mugger near his North London home.

The 68-year-old was targeted as he used a supermarket cashpoint in Islington.

He had popped out to get some medication for his wife, Dr Mine Conkbayir, who broke the news on  on Instagram.

She wrote: 'Well, a horrid start to the weekend, would be an understatement. Yesterday, Paul dashed out to get me some meds. He was mugged on Essex Road (Islington) - at the cashpoint beside the Sainsbury's Local.

'He did fight back and retrieved his card, with the perp scuttling away empty-handed. But that's not the point, is it.'

Dr Conkbayir said Whitehouse asked her to post about the incident 'in the hope that it might help folk to be more aware when out and about.'

She added: 'So, please, everyone - I don't mean to patronise, but please be super vigilant out there.'

The comic has been with his wife, an early childhood education and ADHD expert, for two decades and tied the knot in 2019. They share a daughter but - reportedly - not a house, preferring to live in two separate properties near each other.

Whitehouse is resuming his tour with Fast Show castmates Charlie Higson, Simon Day, John Thomson, Mark Williams and Arabella Weir  next year. Fast Show tour dates.
