Work starts on a third movie

The Inbetweeners are making a third movie.

Production has started today  on the project - 12 years after the second movie and 18 years after the exploits of the then-sixth-formers first aired on E4.

Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas will reprise their roles as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper

WhileThe Inbetweeners creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris will return to write and direct the film. They said in a statement: ‘It's been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we're going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans’

Netflix released a short video teasing the film, featuring the actors and the battered, yellow 1996 Fiat Cinquecento Hawaii – with mismatched door – as driven by Simon in the series.

The original spin-off movie, about a lads’ holiday to Malia, grossed £65 million on a budget of £3.5 million.

Talk of a comeback has swirled ever since the sequel, with the stars asked about it at every opportunity. A 2019 Fwends Reunited special disappointed fans for being a Jimmy Carr-fronted talk show, not a new episode.

Last October, production company Banijay UK struck a deal with  Beesley and Morris via their company Fudge Pack to develop unspecified new Inbetweeners material,

At the time, Banijay UK chief executive Patrick Holland said: ‘They have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audiences old and new.’

Around the same time, Thomas struck a more cautious tone on the Always Be Comedy podcast, suggesting nothing was locked in: ‘All of us feel it would be nice to do... if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it. We’re all still around, we’re all still in each other’s lives,’ he said. 

Today’s announcement does not mention the return of other cast members, including  Emily Atack, who played Charlotte Hinchcliffe or  Greg Davies – who, as head of sixth form, might be unlikely to play a role in the quartets’ now-adult life.

It had been previously reported that Atack had been ‘holding up’ a reunion after falling out with co-star James.
