BBC to air Australian version of Ghosts

Meet a new cast of phantoms

The BBC has bought the rights to the Australian remake of Ghosts, to air on BBC Three and iPlayer ‘soon’.

The antipodean version contains a different cast of spectres haunting the country mansion – Ramshead Manor in this case.

They comprise:

  • Mandy McElhinney as Eileen – an 1800s Irish publican with an alcoholic breath that makes living people drunk.
  • Brent Hill as Gideon – a former naval officer from the Third Fleet, which carried 2,000 prisoner to the colonies.
  • Ines English as Miranda – a betrothed social butterfly from the early 1900s.
  • Michelle Brasier as Lindy – an aerobics instructor from the 1980s able to manipulate electricity.
  • George Zhao as Joon – a Chinese miner who died during the gold rush era.
  • Jackson Tozer as ‘Satan’ – a biker from the 1990s who is actually is a sweet soul. He can touch and move objects with his finger as Simon Farnaby’s Julian Fawcett MP can in the British original.

The manor house is owned by Kate – played by Tamala Shelton – and Sean (Rowan Witt).

Nick Lee, the BBC’s head of programme acquisition, said: ‘It’s a fresh and very fun spin of the wheel for this beloved BBC format. Fans will really enjoy the world this new ghoulish gang create.’

Ghosts Australia premiered on Paramount+ in Australia. The first of eight episodes, which aired in November, attracted 460,000 viewers within seven days of broadcast.

The series had mostly positive reviews, with Anthony Morris of ScreenHub calling it ‘a lightweight, well-crafted dramedy rather than a rapid-fire joke machine’ in a 3.5-star review.
