Comic to oversee new animated series

Nick Mohammed’s Young Magicians books are being turned into an animated series.

The comic has written two novels about the adventures of young magicians Zack, Sophie, Jonny and Alex uncovering secret conspiracies: The Thieves Almanac  in 2017 and The 24-Hour Telepathy Plot in 2020.

Now he is to be the showrunner on the new series, aimed at the over-eights and to be made by Blink Industries and BBC Studios.

Mohammed – best known for starring in Ted Lasso and his stint on Celebrity Traitors last year – said: ‘It’s been an absolute dream come true getting to dive back into the world of The Young Magicians, even more so to develop this as an animated series.

‘Magic was, and kind of still is, my first true love, and so to share that passion with a wider audience, given magic’s rich and bountiful history, its oddness and curiosities, has always been a hope of mine.’

Blink CEO James Stevenson Bretton said he ‘fell in love with the charming and exciting world that Nick built in his books and it’s no surprise that Nick has been able to translate that magic into such an exciting show’.

The news was announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France and first reported by Deadline. It is not yet known which broadcaster will air the series in the UK.

Ricky Gervais will be at the festival on Thursday to officially unveil his new Netflix animated series, Alley Cats, also made by Blink.
