Disney orders a comedy-drama about a dad accused of murder
From Clem Garritty and A24 UK
Disney+ has commissioned a British new comedy drama series called Dad, about three adult siblings whose lives are turned upside-down when their father is accused of a murder said to have taken place during their childhood.
The six-part series has been created by Clem Garritty, pictured, of comedy group Kill The Beast, and will be made by A24 UK, the production company behind Such Brave Girls and Dreaming Whilst Black.
According to Disney, the siblings ‘are forced back together to uncover the secrets buried deep within their family’s past and in doing so, must confront the harsh and often uncomfortably hilarious realities of the present’.
It’s been reported that the streamer landed the rights ahead of rival interest from the BBC, ITV and Sky.
Lee Mason, vice-president of scripted programming for Disney+ in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: ‘Dad is a bold, brilliantly original series that takes a dark and emotionally complex premise and turns it into something deeply compassionate, surprising and sharply funny.
‘At its heart, this is a story about family, identity and the unsettling question of how well we can ever really know the people who shape us.’
Dad is the latest UK commission for Disney+, joining the period drama Rivals, and the romantic comedy Alice and Steve.
