Ruth Jones starts shooting her new comedy

Better Later with Steve Speirs

Ruth Jones and Steve Speirs have begun filming their new BBC comedy series, Better Later.

The six-part series, which the pair also wrote together, centres on the friendship that develops between two people who meet at a knee trauma clinic.

Speirs plays Clive, a 60-year-old widowed retired teacher, while Jones plays Shelley Anne, a 55-year-old environmental health officer going through a difficult divorce. It is filmed in and around the Brecon Beacons and set in a fictional village called Brynfach.

Jones said:  'In a funny way this show has been 35 years in the making, which is when I first met Steve,

‘It’s not that we're slow writers, it's just that we've been up to other things. It's fantastic to be back in front of the camera with him again.’

Speirs – who previously created, wrote and starred in The Tuckers for BBC Wales – added: ‘Ruth makes me laugh more than anyone and I'm a terrible giggler,' he said. 'This could be a long shoot.’

He has previously made travelogue shows with Jones – who is also working on a new show with her Gavin and Stacey co-creator James Corden, called The Choir.

Better Later will air on BBC One, BBC One Wales and BBC iPlayer, though a broadcast date has yet to be announced.
