Show lynchpin attached to direct

A Rick and Morty movie is in the pipeline.

Co-creator Dan Harmon has spoken of plans for ‘a super badass’ feature-length episode for several years – and now it seems closer to reality.

Speaking to Cinemablend, Harmon – who also created Community – said: ‘We are now able to confirm that there is a movie in the works. Jacob Hair is the director.’

Hair has also been behind 26 episodes of the TV show, which starts its ninth season on Adult Swim this Sunday.

Harmon added: ‘I mean, we didn't shop around. He is an absolute, to say rock star is honestly feels like trivialising it because that implies like some kind of flash in the pan, kind of exciting. I mean, Jacob has it like came onto our team. It was like adding a pillar to it.

‘He's our supervising director. I mean, if [Season] 9 feels good to you, he's got a hand. He is responsible for that.

‘When we started talking about a movie and could a movie happen and who would direct it, the first question was, "Can Jacob do it?" Because that would be a dream, as opposed to going out and just getting somebody that did a great job on another animated thing.

‘This is our guy, who has done some of the most amazing work on the show.’

The film is said to be in early development at Warner Bros

Adult Swim has committed to the animated, dimension-hopping exploits of mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his anxious grandson Morty Smith until at least its 12th season.

A spinoff programme, President Curtis, is also in the works for Adult Swim.

The channel released this teaser clip from season 9 yesterday:
