Comedy podcast awards

Tom Crowley took the top prize at the annual Golden Lobes awards for comedy podcasting last night.

The comic, best known for his appearances on The Beef and Dairy Network Podcast and the sitcom Wooden Overcoats:  took the Big Ears award for funniest podcast of the year, for Crowley Time With Me, Tom Crowley.

It is a one-man show of sketches, characters and what he describes as 'messages in bottles plucked from unknown shores'. He beat competition that included the Birthday Girls House Party, Pappy's Flatshare and The Romesh Ranganathan Show.

The show is an indie operation, self-produced and supported by listeners on Patreon – which made the win notable in a field that included several well-resourced productions.

Glenn Moore and Pierre Novellie, the stand-ups behind BudPod,  took home the Listener's Lobe, the only award decided entirely by a public vote, and the ‘best tangent’ award, making it a double for the show. 

Moore,above, and Novellie’s gaming podcast, Button Boys, which they host alongside Sarah Keyworth also won the best artwork award.

The Lobes Legend lifetime achievement honour went to Wolf & Owl with Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis, below, which has been running since November 2020. The show also took the ‘earworm’’ award for best theme tune.

Comic  Katie Norris was named best guest and  Lateral with Tom Scott best live show at the ceremony at the Clapham Grand in South London.

Best blooper went to Kate Dolan’s appearance on I've Had A Rosé, Let's Talk About Feelings with Sam Lake. He said: ‘A discussion of the classic catchphrase "Gayyyyyyyyyyyyyy" and a hysterical breakdown over a cheeky ad-lib about "Benny" Netanyahu makes this clip such a fun watch where it’s impossible not to catch the giggles along with us. Just ask editor Ewen chuckling away in the corner….’

And best listener moment went to a clip from Marcel Lucont's Whine List: recorded at Leicester's Sue Townsend Theatre, ‘with a man making an outdoor amorous confession while next to his unsuspecting wife…

The organiser of the Golden Lobes, Giles Gear, said: 'Another triumphant night for comedy podcasts of all shapes and sizes – the Golden Lobes has cemented itself as a staple in the podcasting calendar. We can't wait to celebrate with some live shows when the festival kicks off this autumn.'

The awards are part of the Cheerful Earful podcast festival, which will run from September 28 to October 18.
