Mawaan Rizwan confirms his sitcom is over
Mawaan Rizwan won’t be making any more Juice.
The comedian has confirmed that the sometimes surreal BBC Three sitcom will be ending after two series
Speaking to the Radio Times, he said: ‘It will always be my first love and there isn’t anyone involved with that show that I don’t adore, but I think it’s healthy to close chapters.’
Rizwan – who is up for best actor in comedy at the Bafats on Sunday – added: ‘Five years of my life doing two series, it’s such a privilege being at the epicentre and having creative control of a project like that, but it's a lot of pressure and a really intense process.
‘You can write on your own, but unless it's a one-person show, you need other people to embody it and then it takes on a life of its own. I love that transition moment where the caterpillar of the script becomes the beautiful butterfly of performance.’
The series was a family affair with Rizwan’s brother Nabhaan and mother Shahnaz playing his fictional relatives on screen.
It also co-starred Russell Tovey as Guy, the older, more serious boyfriend of Rizwan’s character Jamma, former stand-up Jeff Mirza as Saif, Jamma's father, and Emily Lloyd-Saini as Winnie.
Rizwan, who was also a former Taskmaster contestant, is currently starring in the Royal Shakespeare Company's new production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui in Stratford-upon-Avon.
