Comic curates a benefit gig

Stewart Lee is curating a gig to support a group of hunt saboteurs.

The comic has put together the line-up for a benefit gig at London’s Leicester Square Theatre in July, which includes Shaparak Khorsandi, Sue Perkins and Harry Hill.

The money will go towards the North London Hunt Saboteurs, the largest group of anti-hunting activists in the country, with 35 active members

He said: ‘I’m helping the NLHS because they provide a simple direct ongoing challenge to the seemingly untouchable wildlife-killing community's continual refusal to respect the law.’

Money will go towards repairing the group’s vehicles, and contribute to fuel, cameras, drones, and other equipment they use in their work.

Philip Walters, founder of the saboteurs group, said: ‘Everymember of the North London Hunt Saboteurs is a volunteer who puts themselves in harm’s way to protect wildlife.’

In 2024, Walters himself was punched in the face while sitting in his care monitoring the Pytchley Hunt in Northamptonshire by a hunt supporter.

The North London Hunt Saboteurs describe themselves as being ‘hated and feared in equal measure’ by the hunts they target. In 2023, they shut down the East Essex Hunt after securing a conviction of animal cruelty be recording a terrierman torturing a fox.

The benefit on July 6 is called Up The Anti and also features Alasdair Beckett-King, Seann Wals and the appropriately named Daniel Foxx. Tickets are available here.
