Aimee Lou Wood to host SNL UK, despite criticising US original
Nicola Coughlan and Aimee Lou Wood are to host the next two episodes of Saturday Night Live UK, it has been announced.
Bridgerton star Coughlan made a surprise appearance on the inaugural episode, asking a question of host Tina Fey from the audience.
Her appearance comes after her comedy Big Mood has just returned for a second series on Channel 4.
Meanwhile, Wood’s appearance on SNL suggests she has forgiven it for what she called a ‘mean and unfunny' portrayal of her on the US original last year.
Comedian Sarah Sherman donned oversized prosthetic teeth to mimic the White Lotus star, who apparently hadn’t heard of fluoride.
Wood – who also stars in the comedies Sex Education and Daddy Issues – posted that she wished SNL had taken a ‘cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap’ approach to the parody.
She wrote on social media: I don’t mind caricature – I understand that’s what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea [her White Lotus character] was the only one punched down on.’
She also made the point that she has ‘big gap teeth’, not bad teeth, as the fluoride joke suggested, before adding: ‘Not Sarah Sherman’s fault. Not hating on her, hating on the concept.’
Later Wood said that she had received an apology from SNL.
She is hosting the May 2 show when she will be joined by musical guest Meek, while Coughlan hosts the April 25 edition which will feature Foo Fighters. The 75-minute show is broadcast from London at 10pm on Sky.
The show is taking a hiatus this week, following the pattern of the US version which also rests every few weeks. Katherine Ryan's stand-up show First Born Daughter will air in the slot instead.
Last weekend’s SNL episode was watched by 120,000 viewers live – 1.6 per cent of people who were watching TV at the time. It is above Sky’s slot average but it will not be the only metric executives use to judge its success.
A Prince Andrew sketch from two weeks ago has been seen 2.3million times on YouTube alone, while last weekend’s ‘cold open’, featuring Emma Sidi as Melania Trump, has racked up 1.2million views on the platform.
