Fresh accusations of rape and sexual assault
Russell Brand has been charged with another count of rape and another count of sexual assault.
The Metropolitan Police said the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the two charges relating to two further women.
The 50-year-old comedian turned online broadcaster previously pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault in relation to four women between 1999 and 2005.
He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on January 20 in relation to the two new charges, while a trial is set to take place at Southwark Crown Court from June 16 for the five original charges
Lionel Idan, Chief Crown Prosecutor, said: ‘Today the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised two further charges of rape and sexual assault against Russell Brand.
‘These new charges relate to separate reports of non-recent offences in 2009, involving two additional women. These additional charges follow an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
‘Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring these additional charges to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue further criminal proceedings.
‘The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.’
Detectives began investigating allegations into Brand following an investigation by Times newspapers and Channel 4's Dispatches in September 2023.
Detective Chief Inspector Tariq Farooqi from the Metropolitan Police has said the women who have made reports are receiving support from specially trained officers.
Brand, a born-again Christian, recently appeared at America Fest, the rally organised by Turning Point USA, the right-wing organisation started by Charlie Kirk. On stage, he asked if Christ could solve the issues in the Middle East and slammed his ex-wife Katy Perry for dating former Canadian premier Justin Trudeau, who he called a ‘globalist stooge’.
