Rebel Wilson starts filming her girl group comedy
With Guz Khan and some real pop divas
Rebel Wilson has started shooting her new comedy movie about a girl group’s reunion in the UK.
The cast of Girl Group also includes Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts, Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm and All Saints’ Shaznay Lewis – who play the band members alongside Wilson’s character.
Sheridan Smith, Derry Girls star Jamie Lee O’Donnell, comedian Guz Khan and Fresh off the Boat’s Randall Park also have roles.
Wilson will play a pop diva who’s been kicked out of her own girl group’s reunion tour.
Having been slapped with a court-ordered community service. she seizes the chance to stage a comeback by coaching a group of misfit teen girls for a major record label audition… only to push them too far, forcing her to confront the toxic industry that made her.
The young leads – who have not yet been announced – were cast following a nationwide search across the US.
As well as starring, Wilson is writing, directing and producing the series.
She said: ‘Ever since being a part of the Pitch Perfect franchise, I’ve always wanted to create something similar. Girl Group is just so fun and full of spirit that’s ready to have you singing and dancing out of the cinema.
‘We have such an amazing team working on this - from Chris Scott who choreographed Wicked most recently, to the music team that brought you A Star Is Born and Pitch Perfect.
‘The cast is jam packed with triple threats - or maybe I should say quadruple threats because they’re funny as well. This is the ultimate girl power movie!"
Producer Matt Williams added: ‘We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring together such a globally recognised and incredibly talented cast for Girl Group.
‘This film is a true celebration of girl power for a new generation, and it’s been an absolute joy to collaborate with the amazing Rebel Wilson—her vision and passion are truly inspiring.’
The film will also be produced by Wilson under her Camp Sugar banner, alongside Future Artists Entertainment, and Live Nation Studios.
Last month, Wilson appeared on the main stage at Reading Festival with The Kooks, where she sang a cover of Gangsta’s Paradise.
