Adam Kay writes BBC comedy about a 10-year-old doctor

Series stars Peter Serafinowicz, Mike Wozniak, Harry Enfield and more

Doctor turned comedian and bestselling author Adam Kay has written a new BBC comedy series about a child medic.

Dexter Procter: The 10-Year-Old Doctor will star an array of familiar comedy names including Peter Serafinowicz, as the title character’s jealous colleague Dr Drake, as well as  Jameela Jamil, Mike Wozniak, Konnie Huq , Harry Enfield and Sue Johnston.

Screen newcomer Cian Eagle-Service plays Procter, the pint-sized paediatrician trying to solve ‘frequently disgusting’ medical mysteries in the two 50-minute episodes. The character is said to have been able to speak four seconds after he was born and is now the world’s youngest-ever doctor.

The premise echoes early 1990s American sitcom Doogie Howser, MD, which starred Neil Patrick Harris as a teenage physician and ran for four seasons.

BBC commissioner Sarah Muller said: ‘Parents and kids can put down their separate screens to come together to watch Dexter as he navigates the challenges of being a ten-year-old doctor.

‘There are plenty of famous faces who will bring laugh-out-loud moments that can be enjoyed across the generations as we bring this drama for the whole family to BBC One later this year.’

Kay added: ‘I’m so excited to film this semi-autobiographical story about the world’s cleverest child who became a doctor. The adult cast are a Who’s Who of comedy royalty and our phenomenal child cast are genuinely the comedy royalty of tomorrow.’

The specials are being filmed in the Wirral, by Kay’s company Terrible Productions and Various Artists Ltd.
