Barcelona gets a new comedy club
Backed by Michelle Wolf
Barcelona is getting a new purpose-built comedy venue, offering shows in English.
American comic Michelle Wolf, who now lives in the city, is one of the shareholders behind The Comedy Clubhouse Laietana, which will feature two stages for stand-up, format shows and live music.
She said: ‘When I first moved to Barcelona, I had no idea how developed the comedy scene here was. In many ways it reminds me of the vibe in New York when I was first coming up.
‘There’s a fantastic pool of local talent in this city and I’ve seen it go from strength to strength over the past few years, which is why I’m so excited to perform at this new venue.’
The venue is the second for The Comedy Clubhouse, which started in 2020 as a pop-up space in the basement of an Irish bar, with masked comedians performing at strange hours to handfuls of people to comply with Covid restrictions.
It has helped develop locally based talent, such as Irish comic Kyla Cobbler, and hosted international stars including Louis CK, Mark Normand and Trevor Noah.
The new venue on Via Laietana, will officially open on Saturday July 5, with a show headlined by Wolf. Other programming will be in English, Spanish, Catalan and other languages
Club bosses say the English language circuit in Barcelona has grown thanks to the city’s increasing population of English-speaking expats and digital nomads, and its place as a popular year-round holiday destination.
John Allis, founder of The Comedy Clubhouse, said, ‘Since we opened our first venue, we’ve seen comedy become one of Barcelona’s most unexpected and exciting cultural and entertainment attractions.
‘With this growing demand – from both audiences and performers – it felt like the right time to open a second, bigger venue. With this new venue opening, we can offer a more varied selection of performance spaces across our two clubs, which are within a minute’s walk of each other. We hope that even more top acts will put Barcelona on the top of their lists of cities to perform in.’
