CNN to make Chevy Chase documentary

A comedian ' ull of outsized gifts and striking flaws'

CNN is making a documentary about the life of Chevy Chase, billed as ‘authorised yet unfiltered’.

The film is entitled I’m Chevy Chase And You’re Not, the same as his 2010 authorised biography and the catchphrase he used when hosting Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update.

Premiering in 2026, the film, directed by Marina Zenovich, comes amid renewed interest in SNL as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Chase said: ‘I understand CNN is going to release a documentary about me. I’m delighted and I hope I’m in it.’

The broadcaster said: ‘Whether it is his Saturday Night Live screen test or his starring roles in multiple Hollywood comedies, Chase has always had huge comedic range. He is also a complex and contradictory human being, full of outsized gifts and striking flaws.

‘Through illuminating interviews with the Chase family, friends and costars, Zenovich brings us into Chase’s inner world, revealing what is beneath the surface of his superstar bravado.’

Chase was once dubbed one of America’s most-hated comedians, thanks to a number of racist, homophobic, misogynist, and violent outbursts. On SNL he had a bitter feud with co-star John Belushi and got into a fist fight with Bill Murray moments before the show went to air.

Culture journalist  Matt Solomon once wrote: ‘Not everyone hated him, just the people who’ve worked with him.’

And Will Ferrell referred to him as a ‘monster’ referring to the time he told a female writer: ‘Maybe you can give me a hand job later.’

Outside of SNL, Chase’s credits include Caddyshack, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Spies Like Us  and Three Amigos.

Meanwhile. Zenovich’s credits include 2018’s Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind  and 2013’s Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic.

She said: 'I’ve always loved Chevy’s comedy and have been curious as to what makes him tick. That’s what I’m hoping to find out with this film.'

CNN executive Amy Entelis added: ‘We know our viewers will be fascinated by Marina’s revealing examination of the legend behind the laughs"

Howard Owens, one of the executive producers of the documentary added: "Chevy’s fearless wit and groundbreaking work have made him a defining force in American comedy,

‘With unprecedented access to those who know him best, Marina Zenovich pulls back the curtain on a larger-than-life artist, directing with honesty, nuance, and heart. It’s a raw, intimate portrait of a true original—and we’re proud to help bring it to life with CNN Films.’
