Assailant then 'got his ass kicked'

Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage last night during his appearance at the Netflix Is A Joke festival in Los Angeles.

Footage shared online showed someone running hard into the star as he performed on stage at the Hollywood Bowl.

Several people are then seen rushing the stage as the attacker fled into the wings.

According to reports Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock - himself the victim of a very public stage attack when Will Smith slapped him at the Oscars – then joined Chappelle on stage to check if he was OK.

Afterwards, Chappelle told the audience: ‘Whenever you’re in trouble Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat’ – with Foxx adding that he thought the attack ‘was part of the show’.

ABC journalist Stephanie Wash tweeted: ‘Dave Chapelle was rushed & attacked on stage by a man at the Hollywood Bowl. Chapelle tussled w/ the man, who ran behind the screen on stage & was surrounded by security. Chris Rock, who performed earlier, came on stage w/ him & joked: "Was that Will Smith?" #netflixisajokefest’

Chappelle has been the subject of protests about transphobic material in his Netflix special – but it is not known if that motivated the stage attack. However, the comic did joke that his assailant was a ‘trans man’.

He added: ‘I’ve been doing this 35 years, I just stomped [someone] back stage.’

Other footage posted online purported to show the stage invader being taken away in an ambulance. Buzzfeed reporter Brianna Sacks tweeted that he ‘got his ass kicked by at least 10 people’.

Jimmy Carr was also on the bill of the Dave Chappelle And Friends gig and tweeted: ‘The Hollywood Bowl show with the legendary Dave Chappelle was crazy. Just happy everyone’s ok’

And here’s footage of the aftermath of the incident:
