Larry David appears in Toast of Tinseltown
Casting coup for Matt Berry's comedy
Larry David made a surprise guest appearance in the new series of Toast Of Tinseltown tonight, to the delight of fans.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm creator played a character called Sola Mirronek – the author of a book putting forward a new JFK conspiracy.
Matt Berry’s thespian alter-ego Steven Toast was reading the audiobook version, and Mirronek appeared via Zoom to direct proceedings. Which meant David got to utter the catchphrase: ‘Yes I can hear you Clem Fandango’ to the sound engineer.
Short-tempered Mirronek takes issue with Toast’s pronunciation of the very first word of the book – ‘the’ – and pointed out: ‘The idea of an English actor reading this came from my publisher, not from me. I need to make that totally clear. I hated the idea.’
Reaction from fans was universally positive:
Larry David saying ‘Yes, I can hear you Clem Fandango’ is the greatest of late Christmas presents. Welcome back Steven Toast, truly a thespian like no other, what? #ToastofTinseltown pic.twitter.com/eiKJJ7j9a6

As am approaching the last episode of season 11 of Curb, to hear LD say "Yes I can hear you Clem Fandango" on Toast means I have reached comedic nirvana. Nothing else to say really #LarryDavid #CURB #ToastofTinseltown #MattBerry

The pre-title sequence was a rare role for the Seinfeld co-creator beyond his own work – even if the performance was identical to the fictional version of himself he plays on Curb. He previously played Bernie Sanders on Saturday Night Live.
