Comics to star in mockumentary about competitive vegetable growers

Comics including Aisling Bea, Mark Silcox and King Gary star Laura Checkley are to appear in a new mockumentary film set in the world of competitive vegetable growers.

Jo Hartley,  who plays June in Ricky Gervais’s After Life, will lead the comedy-drama as Caroline who calls in two private detectives when her prized marrow plants are stolen.

According to trade magazine The Hollywood Reporter: 'The hunt for her missing marrows takes her way beyond the allotments, plunging her into a national corruption scandal that goes all the way to the top.’

Silcox plays a competition judge, but Bea's role is not yet known.

The rest of ensemble cast includes Celyn Jones (Submergence), Richard Lumsden (Sightseers), Rebekah Murrell (Pls Like), Ash Tandon (Bodyguard), Ray Fearon (Beauty and the Beast) and Steve Brody (Life’s Too Short).

Swede Caroline, which is due to start shooting this month in the UK, is the feature directorial debut for  Finn Bruce and Brook Driver, who wrote the script.

Boris Thompson-Roylance from prodcuers Deadbeat Films said: 'This is a feel-good, homegrown tale, celebrating the great British garden culture and the weird and wonderful eccentrics whom inhabit it – you’re going to love it.’
