Blake Harrison and Meera Syal join ITV's refugee comedy
Meera Syal and Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison are joining the cast of new ITV sitcom Kate And Koji.
The new series, about an African asylum-seeker, has been written by Outnumbered creators Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton and marks the broadcaster’s return to comedy months after its boss Kevin Lygo said the future of scripted comedy looked ‘quite bleak’ for his flagship channel.
As Chortle reported in August, the show stars Brenda Blethyn as Kate, the owner of a seaside cafe who forms an unexpected friendship with Koji, an African asylum-seeker, played by Jimmy Akingbola.
Since then the title has changed slightly, as it was developed under the working title Kate and Kolo.
Harrison will play Kate’s funny and resourceful nephew Medium Dave, who acts as peacemaker between the two central characters, who often clash. And Syal guest stars as a GP who could get Koji deported.
Also joining the cast is Barbara Flynn, who will play Councillor Bone, Kate’s lifelong arch-enemy.
Kate And Koji. will be filmed in front of a live studio audience in January and February. See our free tickets page for details of how to be there.
