Netflix special for Wanda Sykes

...becoming the first black woman to get one

Wanda Sykes is to become the first African-American woman to have her own full-length comedy special on Netflix.

The comic has announced that the show, Not Normal,  will launch globally on May 21.

She wrote on Instagram: ‘I’m so excited about this. I’m like a kid waiting for Christmas. I can’t wait for you to see it!’

Netflix was last year slammed for its treatment of black female comics, with Mo’Nique going public to complain about the amount of money they offered her compared to other stand-ups.

At the time, Sykes tweeted in response: 'Thank you for speaking out. @netflix offered me less than half of your $500k. I was offended but found another home. #EPIX.’

Details of the financial deal she struck for Not Normal have not been disclosed.

Sykes is also producing the forthcoming Netflix series Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready, which will showcase a number of black female stand-ups in half-hour specials.
