What Is Music Videos? for iPlayer

Radio 1 has ordered a new comedy show for the iPlayer, mixing sketch comedy and music videos.

The series of 12 monthly episodes - What Is Music Videos? - claims to look behind the scenes at how the music videos from the station’s playlist were made.

Green Wing’s Pippa Haywood will voice the AI Player introducing the videos with her ‘incoherent ramblings’. Radio 1 DJs and Will Best, who previously co-hosted ITV1’s  Dance Dance Dance alongside Alesha Dixon, will also appear.

Sam Bailey, commissioning editor for Radio 1’s  iPlayer channel, said: ‘I’m really excited about bringing a new format to BBC iPlayer that showcases the best of the music Radio 1 plays, but with a comic twist.

‘With the AI Player, we’ve stumbled upon a truly remarkable piece of technology - it seems to know absolutely nothing about music, but once you’ve heard its take on the latest hits, you certainly never listen to them in the same way again.’

The programme was commissioned from Starstruck Media, and the writing team will be led by James Menzies, whose previous credits include Murder in Successville, Go 8 Bit and Through The Keyhole.

The first episode of What Is Music Videos will be available  from early August. Here’s a teaser:
