Corden’s Carpool Karaoke scoops an Emmy

Ahead of Louis CK, Sarah Silverman and others

James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke has beaten Louis CK, Sarah Silverman, Samantha Bee and and Stephen Colbert to an Emmy.

A primetime special edition of his hit singalong segment was named best variety special last night. Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez were the guests on the spin-off programme from his talk show, which aired on the CBS network in May.

Also shortlisted were Louis CK’s special 2017, Silverman’s A Speck Of Dust, Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night and  Bee’s  Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

However the latter did win the best variety special writing award ahead of a shortlist featuring almost the same names, but with the   Corden-hosted Tony Awards in place of Carpool Karaoke. The Broadway ceremony took the best ‘special class’ programme award.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was named best interactive programme, while its Fuck 2016 skit won an Emmy for picture editing.

Bob’s Burgers scooped best animated programme and Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane was named best character voice-over performance.

And Trevor Noah’s Between The Scenes segments of the Daily Show won the best short form variety series.

Yesterday’s ceremony was first half of a two-night ‘creative arts award’ event, with more Emmys handed out tonight.

The more high-profile categories will be awarded on September 17 in a  ceremony broadcast live on TV.
