Dirk Gently set for TV return

BBC America to revive the holistic detective

Dirk Gently, the holistic detective created by Douglas Adams, could be heading back to TV.

BBC America has announced a new show is in development based on the books penned by the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy author.

Previously BBC Four adapted the work for three comedy-dramas, which starred Stephen Mangan in the title role and Darren Boyd as sidekick  Richard MacDuff, and aired between 2010 and 2012.

Those episodes were overseen by Howard Overman – who has gone on to work on Misfits and Atlantis – while the new US series is being penned by Max Landis, who wrote the 2012 sci-fi film Chronicle.

BBC America president Sarah Barnett announced the news as part of a slate of projects unveiled at the Television Critics Association in Los Angeles.

She said: ‘The scripted TV explosion in recent years has affirmed over and over that strong visionaries are the heart of creative and commercial success. At BBC America we’re doubling down on extraordinary creator-led projects.’

Describing Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, BBC America said: ‘With an utterly fresh, comically self-aware tone, this series is equally sincere in its danger, humour, violence and drama.’

Producers IDW, Circle of Confusion and Ideate are working on the revival.
