Rich Fulcher, cult leader

In a new US sitcom in development

Mighty Boosh star Rich Fulcher is working on a new sitcom idea for the States.

The IFC network has ordered a sample script of Cult Following, about two friends who jointly run a health food restaurant and inadvertently become cult leaders.

Fulcher has teamed up with with Matt Besser, co-founder of acclaimed sketch troupe the Upright Citizens Brigade, to write and star in the show.

It is one of 11 comedy projects the broadcaster has announced as being in development, following the success of shows such as Portlandia. It is also launching top podcaster Mark Maron’s sitcom next month.

The three shows set to go to pilot are:

Garfunkel & Oates: A sitcom based on Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci’s singing comedy-folk double-act as ‘slightly fictionalised versions of themselves’.

Timms Industrial Piping: A Dynasty-style soap epic - but done as a stop-motion animation, with baby dolls representing adult characters. It features the voices of Maria Bamford, John Lithgow, Elizabeth Banks, Kumail Nanjiani and more.

International Plan: About two newly single guys who travel around the world looking for love, based on the true experiences of Jimmy Fallon writers Michael Blieden and Eric Ledgin (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

And the other seven given script orders are:

American Storage: About a man who lives in a storage unit, and his friendship with a man who works there.

God’s Work: Actor/comedian Kyle Dunnigan plays multiple characters living around a Connecticut church.

Jetpackyla: About a washed up comic book illustrator as he befriends a vampire from the future, this show from Sarah Silverman Program producer Rob Schrab is described as ‘part Terminator, part X-Files, part Mork and Mindy’.

Stupid Life Based on comedian Chris Gethard’s autobiographical book A Bad Idea I'm About to Do: True Tales of Seriously Poor Judgment and Stunningly Awkward Adventure

Trigger Men An action buddy comedy based on a graphic novel, in which a former hitman tries to clean up his act.

Two Idiots: Written by Will & Grace star Megan Mullally and newcomer Tina Kapousis, this revolves around two out-of-touch Beverly Hills women struggling with simple everyday tasks.

Wasps: The story of dysfunctional family who have squandered away their money and are left with only the shared ownership of an enormous mansion.
