Controversial US comic makes a comeback

Controversial American comedian Andrew Dice Clay is making a comeback – with his first stand-up special in 17 years.

The US cable network Showtime is to air his new show, Indestructible, late on New Year’s Eve.

He said: ‘My filth is derived from watching people, whether it be behind a bedroom door, or on a New York City subway. At the end of the day, it’s comedy, it's what I do. If I really did just one quarter of what I say on stage, I’d be doing 25 to life.’

Clay, 55, has been a comic for more than 35 years, but his act has been criticised as crude, misogynistic, racist, homophobic and degrading.

When he guest hosted Saturday Night Live in 1990, Sinéad O'Connor and regular cast member Nora Dunn refused to appear on the same show. MTV banned him ‘for life’ in 1989 for reciting adult nursery rhymes during the annual Video Music Awards ceremony – but he was allowed back on air last year.
