My Family 'wasn't axed for being middle class'

BBC One boss hits back

BBC One’s controller Danny Cohen has denied My Family was axed because it was ‘too middle class’.

Star Zone Wanamaker said that was the reason a BBC executive gave her for the show being pulled after 11 series and 120 episodes.

But now Cohen has poured scorn on that idea, telling the Radio Tines: ‘Not true.’

‘I’m not saying that someone didn’t tell her that. But every comedy reaches the point where it’s not as fresh as it was. The family had fled, they’d left the house.

“There’s only a finite amount of money and, by ending some shows, I freed the money to do Call the Midwife in January. That’s how it works.’

At its peak the show drew audiences of up to 10million, but by the time the plug was pulled last year viewing figures were half that.
