And we're off...

Student comedy contest heats up

The heats of the Chortle Student Comedy Award kick off this week.

More than 250 would-be comics entered the contest, with the hope of winning the £1,000 first prize and the invaluable leg-up in the comedy industry that the title provides.

Demand was so high that two behind-closed-doors auditions have already taken place in London, ensuring that judges could get to see as many entrants as possible. From these Victoria Cullen, Sam Brassington, Chazz Redhead, Padraig Ryan and Nathan Wilcock have so far been offered places in the main heats.

Plus we have added an additional heat in Leicester University’s Oadby campus on March 8.

Our first heat is at the University of Glamorgan tomorrow (Tuesday), compered by Matt Price; followed by Newcastle on Thursday, compered by Barry Dodds. The venue for this heat has been changed, and now takes place at the student-friendly North Terrace Pub, in North Terrace, NE2 4AN.

Visit out Student Comedy Awards microsite for details of the other heats; and to chart the competition’s progress as we move around the country.

Now in its eighth year, previous winners and finalists have included Simon Bird, Tom Deacon, Lloyd Langford, Nathan Caton, Joe Lycett and Iain Stirling
