Gag record attempt fails

Sutherland 72 jokes short of the target

Kev F Sutherland has failed in his attempt to crack the most jokes in an hour.

The comic told 478 gags – well short of the 549 record currently held by Australian stand-up Lehmo – in front of an audience n Bristol yesterday.

After the attempt, in aid of Comic Relief, Sutherland said: ‘So near – and yet a really, really long way away from succeeding.’

His total didn’t even exceed that of previous record holder Tim Vine, who cracked 499 jokes in 2004.

Writing on his blog today, Sutherland added: ‘I fear was to too concerned in ensuring I got the laughs rather than concentrating on the speed. In this event you need to be one part comedian to one.’

He also admitted he should have had practice runs in front of an audience – Lehmo had had three attempts before he took the title in 2005.
