Cancer claims her at 65

Wendy Richard, the actress who went from sitcom stardom in Are You Being Served? to EastEnders fame has died aged 65.

The star, who played matriach Pauline Fowler in the BBC soap opera, had been suffering from cancer.

Her agent Kevin Francis said: ‘She was incredibly brave and retained her sense of humour right to the end.’

She died in a Harley Street clinic in London, with her husband John Burns by her side.

As well as her role as saucy shop girl Miss Brahms in the Are You Being Served? Richard’s comedy career also included roles in Dad's Army, Up Pompeii!, The Likely Lads and Grace & Favour, as well as a cameo role in Carry On Matron and a supporting part in Carry On Girls.
