Norton under fire for Camilla comment

Tabloid witchhunt continues...

Graham Norton has become the latest victim of the increasingly desperate tabloid witch-hunt against comedians.

The comic is under fire from The Sun today for a slight dig at Camilla Parker-Bowles’s looks.

His comment came after a performance by the Pussycat Dolls at last night’s Royal Variety Performance, attended by Prince Charles and his wife.

After their song, Norton said: ‘And there you have the Pussycat Dolls singing to the Prince, “Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?”.’

The newspaper today branded the comment a ‘cruel jibe’ and linked it to other ‘bad taste blunders’ such as Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand’s phone calls to Andrew Sachs.

However, the BBC last night said the joke was ‘light banter’ that intended ‘no offence’ to Camilla. And none of the readers posting on The Sun’s website found the comments out of line.

The newspaper also reported that Norton performed in the lipstick, a wig and red sequinned frock... but failed to mention that is his stage outfit for the West End musical La Cage Aux Folles, which is being showcased at the Royal Variety Performance.

The show airs on BBC One at 7.30pm next Wednesday.
